The national basketball team on Sunday hit Rwanda 56-47 in a tight friendly match played at Nyayo National Stadium gymnasium.

Kenya took time to settle and only showed their true colours in the last quarter. Rwanda, who took a 24-23 lead at the break, were a hard nut to crack. In the last quarter, the scores were tied 37-37 as Kenya struggled to find an edge. Peter Kiganya shot 16 points and Nelson Njau, who nailed the team’s opener, had 12.

Rwanda, who used the match as build up towards the Senior Nations Cup in Kigali, later this month, played a good game and were co-ordinated.Umuhire Velry scored 12 and Imanuka Chima had 10.

Kenyan coach Gitau Waringo attributed the sluggish start to lack of co-ordination.

“We have a good team, but they have yet to play together and this was clear,” said the tactician.
